I think John Windsor will defeat former state Sen. Rob Smith in the Democratic race for secretary of state. In the Republican race, Delbert Hosemann is a clear favorite. He could win it without a runoff, although Rep. Mike Lott and Jeffery Rupp have a following. Hosemann will be the nominee and most likely the next secretary of state.
Political picks are like pre-season football guesses. There will be ample opportunties for candidates to drop the ball before next Tuesday in these close races.

Gazing inside the cracked crystal ball, here's how I see Aug. 7...

The secretary of state's race is interesting in both party primaries. On the GOP side, look for Delbert Hosemann of Jackson and state Rep. Mike Lott of Petal to lead the balloting. Hosemann - off the strength of his catchy "Engelbert" TV spots - should lead the GOP ticket.

Delbert Hosemann is close to getting out of the Republican primary for Secretary of State without a runoff. Considering he has more than thrice as much cash on hand as the top Democrat and a much higher name id, he looks to be a juggernaut.

"Englebert" Hosemann for Secretary of State on the GOP side. And if he keeps up a substantive campaign and commercials that visually take him outside of NE Jackson...he will win it all.
